Looking back on my time volunteering in Madagascar, I can confidently say it was one of the most enriching and unforgettable experiences of my life. If you’re wondering why volunteering abroad can be so impactful, here are my top 5 reasons to volunteer and why this journey truly changed me:
1. The True “Local Experience”
We lived deep in the heart of nature—our campsite was nestled within the forest, at least a 30-minute walk from the nearest village. Life was simple and beautifully disconnected from the modern world: no mobile phones, no tablets—just the sounds of the wild and the occasional crowing of the camp’s pet rooster, our very reliable alarm clock at dawn. Meals were humble and delicious, mostly consisting of rice and zebu (a local breed of cattle), prepared the Malagasy way. Each day was filled with hikes through lush mountain trails, often passing friendly villagers with warm smiles and a cheerful “mora mora” (take it easy) greeting. It felt like stepping into another world one that’s slower, more grounded, and incredibly welcoming.
2. Learning Like Never Before
Coming from a Biology background, I thought I knew quite a bit about ecosystems but Madagascar proved me wrong in the best way possible. This island is home to species found nowhere else on Earth, and I soaked up every bit of knowledge I could about its unique flora and fauna. From tiny chameleons to towering baobabs, every day offered something new to learn and marvel at.
3. Real-World Survey Skills
One of the most valuable aspects of my time here was the hands-on scientific fieldwork. We conducted ecological surveys in the forests of Nosy Komba, collecting data on wildlife in their untouched natural habitat. It was both challenging and exhilarating an incredible opportunity to sharpen my research skills while contributing to conservation efforts.
4. A Global Community
Another highlight? The people. I met fellow volunteers from all over the world like Canada, Australia, Iceland, Colombia, and beyond. It was amazing to share stories, laugh, and work together with such a diverse group of individuals who all shared a common goal: to make a positive impact and learn as much as possible along the way.
5. Pure Joy
Above all, it was fun. So much fun. From exploring new places to bonding over campfire chats and crazy adventures, every moment was filled with energy, laughter, and a sense of purpose. This volunteering trip didn’t just teach me things it changed me, and I’ll always carry those memories with me.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone at MRCI who made this journey possible. I’ll forever be grateful.
