About Our English Teaching Program in Madagascar
Volunteers work with MRCI’s local team and do not need to have any prior teaching experience, just a good understanding of the English language is required. Due to increasing tourism, there is a high demand for English in Nosy Komba and Nosy Be communities. Learning English enhances locals’ job prospects in the tourism sector. MRCI volunteers have already transformed language skills in these areas.
Volunteers teach English in small village schools on Nosy Be and Nosy Komba, including adult classes. They also assist staff at the Oceanographic Research Institute on Nosy Be to improve their English for international collaboration.
MRCI offers 14 different classes around Nosy Komba, from basic to advanced English. Volunteers travel to classes by boat and Tuk-Tuk. These transportation expenses for classes are included in the program fee and a packed lunch is provided by the camp’s canteen staff.
While beginner classes follow a structured curriculum, advanced classes focus on conversation and practical usage, perfect for those interested in teaching English as a foreign language.
Volunteers can also learn Malagasy at our Turtle Cove camp during free time at no extra cost, complementing the immersive experience of teaching English abroad.
Program Costs
Fees cover staff, transportation, camp maintenance, equipment, meals, and other expenses. In cases where surplus funds are available from the teaching program, these funds are directed towards the MRCI community program to construct and renovate local schools and clinics.
If you’re interested in visiting or teaching at MRCI’s volunteer schools or contributing to community projects, please discuss this with your program leader.

What Previous Volunteers Have To Say
Alex MacIntyre
VOLUNTEER“The wisdom and perspective I have gained during my time in Madagascar will remain with me always. As will the friendships I have forged. So, for all those considering volunteering with MRCI in the future, my advice is simple. Do it. Time on this strange and wonderful speck of paradise is time well spent”
Caitlin
VOLUNTEER“We taught kids and adults. The kids eager for more…more learning, more yelling, more colouring, more play time, more songs and dances. Eager to enjoy their time that they have with us. These kids to me, became like family. Local Malagasy kids, sharing and giving the little food they have, always wanting you to join in a game of basketball or soccer, but my favourite was swim time. I had so much fun with these beautiful kids,”
Linde
VOLUNTEER“The community and teaching programs opened my eyes and I had the opportunity to meet so many fantastic people. MRCI made my stay here so comfortable and I have to say, Alice and Lucy, you two are awesome. I loved the festivities of the camp Olympics and camp parties. Thanks for this fantastic experience and I will never forget this place.”
Chandler Renz
VOLUNTEER“My experience as a volunteer teaching assistant has shown me that, while not all of us can do great things alone, we can achieve a lot when we work together and put our hearts into everything we do. I look forward to seeing all these wonderful people again. As we continue to do small things with great love, I am grateful to be part of such a special community.”
Rachel Rawcliffe
VOLUNTEER“I also had the opportunity to spend 10 days living on a boat travelling around islands and the mainland. The boat trip was amazing, even though it rained a lot, we went to a lemur island, saw a giant tortoise and visited remote villages. I was most nervous about going into the forest, however, I loved seeing the lemurs, chameleons, geckos and snakes!”
James Barker
VOLUNTEER“Teaching was not only rewarding but tremendous fun, there’s a range of ages and abilities, from 5 year olds, with very basic English but huge characters and great enthusiasm to learn, to adults with impressive English, but with a burning desire to refine and build on their knowledge. It wasn’t only the actual teaching that was so enjoyable about this aspect of the programme but also getting to know the local people who are warm, welcoming and enormous fun to be around.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be a qualified teacher to teach English abroad?
No, many of our volunteers have never taught before. We provide resources, lesson ideas, and a structured curriculum for beginner classes. All you need is good English skills and enthusiasm
Do I need a TEFL certificate to teach English in Madagascar?
No, you don’t. Anyone with a good level of English and a willingness to help can join. That said, having a TEFL certificate (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) can give you extra confidence and open up opportunities if you’d like to continue teaching English abroad after your time in Madagascar.
When is TEFL not required for volunteer teaching?
TEFL isn’t needed when you join as a volunteer. Our programs are designed for people who want to give back, experience cultural exchange, and support local schools. TEFL is more important if you plan to find paid teaching jobs abroad later.
As a volunteer teacher in Madagascar, how many classes will I teach per week?
Volunteers usually teach around 10–14 classes per week, depending on community needs. Classes range from children in village schools to adult learners, giving you a broad and rewarding experience teaching English in Madagascar.
How many students will be in each class, and what age groups will I teach?
Class sizes are generally small, often 10–30 students, though this can vary. You may work with young children, teenagers, or even adults, including professionals looking to improve their English for tourism and research.
Will MRCI help me with the visa process?
Yes. Our team provides guidance and support for getting your visa. In most cases, a tourist visa is required and can be arranged on arrival or in advance.
When should I apply?
Our teaching program runs all year, starting on the first and third Monday of each month. To secure your spot, it’s best to apply at least 3–6 months in advance, especially if you plan to join during peak travel seasons.
What other volunteering opportunities are available?
Besides English teaching, MRCI offers programs in marine conservation, sea turtle monitoring, forest conservation, and community development projects. Many volunteers choose to combine teaching English with another area they’re passionate about.
Will I have free time to explore Madagascar?
Yes. Weekends and evenings are usually free, giving you time to relax or explore. Many volunteers use this time for island-hopping, snorkeling, diving, or visiting nearby nature reserves.
What vaccinations should I have before traveling?
Madagascar does not require any vaccinations to enter the country. Commonly recommended vaccinations for Madagascar include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus. Malaria prevention medication is also advised. Always check with your doctor or a travel clinic before booking flights.
Can I volunteer with friends or family?
Absolutely! We welcome groups, couples, and families. Sharing the experience of teaching English abroad with someone close to you can make it even more memorable.
